As a self-published author, I was more than happy to get a review copy of this book.The book starts off by explaining who editors are, and why they are not foes, but friends. Why? Because hiring an editor is all about making your writing better.
One thing I appreciated was the information on editing rates, ranging from high, low, and average, for different types of editing. Debra explains not just the hourly rate for editors, but the amount of time editing takes as well. This information provides a way to estimate what it may cost to hire an editor.
The bad news is that editing, while worth it, can be expensive. The good news is, this book provides tips for self-editing, which when done well, can drastically reduce the cost of professional editing.

I loved this little quick read. This book is very useful to read BEFORE you hire an editor. Deb does a nice job of giving authors a clear picture of the various types of editing, which newbies usually learn the hard way, the types of edits we can do on our own to make our manuscripts better, basic grammar clarity, and understanding on POV. It is a handy resource for fiction and non-fiction authors and new editors to read. Although some parts geared clearly toward fiction, it was still a worthwhile read for my non fiction book! I didn't realize what various editors were capable of, or doing for my manuscript or the right time to get one. I really needed a writing coach FIRST before an editor, but editors don't always tell you that. So this book helps to see the distinct types of editing, and I think that would've saved me time wasted in the beginning of my writing journey.
I am a new author, and was thrilled to get my hands on a preview copy of this book. First, Debra begins by explaining exactly what an editor is and is not. First lessons for authors Editors are our friends. A GOOD editor is gem. Knowing the hints in this book will put you on the good side of your editor.
Next, Debra gives us 7 in-depth, meat and bones hints for our self-editing. She ends the book with a cheat-sheet of 10 things to do before hiring an editor. I'm in the process of writing a new book, and you can bet her book is going to be my constant companion.
Love this book! Every author should have this in their resource library. Great information, and very empowering.
This was not helpful at all. It was a waste of money, and I wish I could get my $2 back.
Excellent resources for every writer. Great concise content compiled from the experienced wisdom of years working in the trenches. Reading this is compulsory for all writers who want to cut their costs.

The sixty five page booklet is packed with useful information.
Some will of course see it as a, tilting of the playing field, by the
author. Since she is also an editor.
But, I see it as a helpful way to rewrite, revise, selfpolice (clean up) a
manuscript, in the areas editors will scrutinize.
